Thank you for your support and patience during this ever-changing situation. This situation is not the experience anyone expected for your student's study year in Canada. We know there are concerns for the health of students who are far from their home. I am writing to provide an update of the situation in Lethbridge.
Currently, there is 1 confirmed case of COVID-19 in Lethbridge, 97 cases total in Alberta. Classes at all schools and universities have been canceled and the public is encouraged to stay home as much as possible. Recreation centres, theatres, restaurants, churches and facilities where groups gather have been closed. Your child is safe and healthy.
Our schools are currently planning to teach remotely, and are collaborating to ensure the best possible options for those studying in Alberta. Principals and teachers have been communicating with students and families in Alberta, and more details will be announced in the coming days. We will continue to support and update you.
We have been asked if students will be sent to their home countries. At Holy Spirit Catholic Schools, we know that parents are the primary educators of their children and will make the best decision for their children. Please consider the following when making this decision:
- People are asked to self-isolate at home, maintain a distance from others, and wash hands frequently to avoid the spread of the virus.
- Some students' home countries have a large number of COVID-19 cases. There is risk of becoming infected while transiting through airports. The confirmed cases in Alberta were contracted while travelling.
- Flights out of Lethbridge are available until March 30, and then will become rare. We are asking students to make arrangements to fly from Lethbridge because travel to Calgary is not advised.
- We will validate marks for work to this point if the student leaves Alberta, and refund the unused homestay payments.
Please notify us whether your student will be remaining in Lethbridge or returning home. We are here to help and support these students and look forward to the end of this difficult time.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
